Materials you'll need:
A medium-sized pumpkin
Strong twine or jute rope
Birdseed
A large spoon
A knife or little pumpkin saw
A scooping tool (or you can use the large spoon)
A sturdy branch or hook to hang the feeder
Instructions:
Select a Pumpkin:
Choose a medium-sized pumpkin that is still firm and not too ripe. It should be large enough to hold a good amount of birdseed but not too heavy to hang easily.
Gather Materials:
Collect all the materials you'll need, as listed above.
Cut approximately in half – top to bottom:
Use a knife or pumpkin saw to divide the pumpkin approximate in half (or to whatever size you want to use for your feeder).
Scoop Out the Pumpkin:
Use a scooping tool or large spoon to remove the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin. Make sure to clean it thoroughly so that only the pumpkin shell remains.
Create Twine Loops:
Cut two (or three) long pieces of twine or jute rope – approximately 4’ long. Create loops at the ends of each piece of twine by tying the ends together. These loops will be used to hang the pumpkin.
Thread the Loops:
Insert each looped twine under the pumpkin, crossing them in the center. You should have two or three loops forming a sort of X shape under the pumpkin to support it when hanging.
Fill the Pumpkin:
Carefully pour birdseed into the cleaned pumpkin. Fill it to the desired level but avoid overfilling, as you want the birds to access the seed easily.
Hang the Feeder:
Find a sturdy branch or hook in your garden or yard to hang the bird feeder. Use the loops you created to hang the pumpkin from the branch or hook.
Monitor and Refill:
Keep an eye on the bird feeder and refill it as needed to attract more birds to your garden. Birds will be drawn to the seeds inside the pumpkin.
Enjoy Birdwatching:
Now, sit back and enjoy watching the birds as they visit your homemade bird feeder.
